The six Avatar cosplayers I saw at AX. And yes, Aang is a woman. A woman who shaved her head and painted an arrow on it. Now THAT'S dedication.

Update note:
Ty Lee is played by
Toph is played by
Avatar Kyoshi is play by
Random Kyoshi Warrior is played by

Update 2!:
And, we finally have our Aang! Played by the dedicated

Be sure to note them your praise for their costumes as well! It's their hard work, not mine, that's getting all this attention.

Various people made them and wore them to Anime Expo 2007. Look at my original comments to find out who all the people are (that I could track down).

Yeah, that's some serious hating, and I somehow doubt you're actually sorry about it. The comments about age and weight actually aren't particularly appreciated. These people worked hard on their costumes because they love the show too, and I think your views come across as rather bigotted and rude. It's people like you who give cosplayers a bad name, because we can't be expected to look exactly like the cartoon characters. I happen to cosplay as Yue. I also happen to not be 16 or have dusky skin or be anything remotely resembling Asian. But I am a serious cosplayer, and I am very proud of my sewing abilities. Everyone has to start somewhere. For all you know, that's the Sokka's first costume ever. You can't expect everyone to be perfect on the first try. Good for you for making somethng "10x better," but frankly, I don't care.

Plus cosplayers freak me out quite often already..

anime is japanese and chars are referenced from japanese features--- small, cat-eyed, slim, oddly beautiful, or nice to look at
caucasians on the otherhand are mostly wide, tall, muscular, intimidating people and has a different kind of good looks
contrast of Marvel and Shojou :D its a genetics thing

Yet anime is based of American cartoons (Tetsuon Atom was modeled after Disney cartoons, I kid you not), and the characters have wide, round eyes, and pale skin. Well, with the exception of Katarta and Sokka, of course. You also must look at the age of the characters when you compair slimness. Sokka is slim, Zhao is not. Zhao is quite muscular with an intimidating stature that would more befit a Marvel character. But then, Zhao is middle-aged while Sokka is 15. And Avatar as a whole is not actually anime.

still, big people can't really dress up to look like slim petite anime chars
and most anime/manga chars are feminine lol
it doesn't really feel right( human psycho-physical experience thing)
and avatar is an equal mix of looks and feel of anime and american cartoon--- caused by the ever growing acceptance of anime in america--- to please both audiences

I am swiftly starting to take offense at this conversation, since I am not remotely as "slim" or "petite" as I was in high school. By no means do I look fat, the way the media makes fat look, but I am out of shape, and I've got several doezen pounds I'm working on losing. I am a very good costume maker, and I shouldn't have to be limited because people like you think "it doesn't feel right" for "big people" to cosplay. It makes me wonder what your hair-brained idea of "big" is, anyway. The point of cosplay is not to reproduce the character exactly, but to reproduce the costume as closely as possible.

That would be awesome! An even cooler feature would be to have it with a little bit of snow around you with an easily removed backround and then photoshop in a backround from the show. Then it would be completely awesome.
